Samantha Swenson, M.A., NCC, Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern
In her own words ...
I am a Midwestern girl at heart, as I was born and raised in a small town in Minnesota. Summer was always my favorite season when I was younger, and I made it a mission of mine to move to the Sunshine state. I went to college at the University of South Florida (Go Bulls!) and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, minoring in both Public Health and Women’s Studies.
Directly following my graduation from the University of South Florida, I eagerly pursued my Master’s Degree in Counselor Education at the University of Central Florida with concentration in both Mental Health Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy. I am enthusiastic about learning and believe it is a lifelong process. I frequently use education in my counseling approach because I strongly believe building awareness and developing skills can be greatly beneficial.
I have always had a passion for counseling and find my inspiration comes from my mother, an excellent parent and life coach. The values and strategies I have learned from her have become a compass on my journey to finding my own theoretical orientation. I believe every person is the master of his or her own life. I believe in the power of positive thinking. I believe in hope. One of my favorite quotes, “It isn’t what you look at that matters, it’s what you see”, captures what is at the heart of my counseling style. I believe in turning life’s challenges into opportunities. I believe in thinking of how life may be happening for us, rather than to us.
I am especially motivated to work with couples and families. Relationships, whether parent-child, siblings, or partners, have always fascinated me. I love being able to help people rebuild and reconnect. I find joy in helping others understand themselves and each other better.
I really value the work-life balance and for me that means spending quality time with my friends, family, and my puppy, Emma. Some of my interests include: music, movies, games, talking, singing, dancing, playing volleyball, and taking trips to the beach. On any given day, I can rarely be caught without a cup of coffee in my hand or a smile on my face (but, in that order, of course).
